Lead Java Architect – Greenfield Project | Networking & Security | Brussels (Hybrid)

About the Company:

Our client, a leading innovator in the networking and security space, is embarking on a greenfield project that will shape the next generation of secure communication solutions. They are building a new technical foundation from the ground up and are seeking a Lead Java Architect to take ownership of both the technical vision and team leadership.

The Role:

As the Lead Java Architect, you’ll play a key role in designing and delivering the architecture for this new platform. You’ll be both hands-on and strategic – spending roughly 50% of your time leading and mentoring a small team of at least two other architects, and 50% contributing technically to complex backend design and development decisions.

You’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, ensuring architectural best practices, scalability, and performance across the system. This is an opportunity to have a true impact on a product’s foundation and to influence long-term technology choices.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the architecture design and technical roadmap for a new greenfield system in the networking/security domain.
• Manage and mentor a team of 2+ architects, ensuring alignment with company and project goals.
• Drive best practices in software architecture, scalability, and performance.
• Stay hands-on with code reviews, architectural prototyping, and technical problem-solving (~50% of time).
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into technical solutions.
• Ensure consistent documentation, design patterns, and quality standards are followed.

Technical Environment:

• JVM Stack (Java) – strong experience required.
• Messaging systems: Kafka, RabbitMQ, or Artemis (experience with at least one required).
• Databases: Non-SQL (MariaDB, Oracle, CouchDB, etc.).
• ElasticSearch (nice to have).
• Experience in distributed systems, scalability, and performance optimization is a plus.

Profile:

• Proven background as a Senior/Lead Java Architect in large-scale or high-security environments.
• Strong leadership and communication skills – able to coordinate, motivate, and guide technical peers.
• Comfortable working in both hands-on technical and strategic leadership capacities.
• Fluent in English; French or Dutch is a plus.
