System Engineer


We’re looking for an experienced System Engineer (Domain Expert) to join a leading European energy infrastructure group driving the transition toward a sustainable and reliable power system. You’ll play a key role in supporting critical in-house applications and infrastructure that ensure operational excellence across national and cross-border energy networks.

  • Position: Freelance System Engineer (Domain Expert)
  • Duration: 12-month contract (extendable)
  • Day Rate: €(Negotiable & Competitive)
  • Location: Brussels, Belgium (Hybrid - 60% remote / 40% onsite)
  • Start Date: ASAP


Core Responsibilities

  • Deploy, configure, and manage infrastructure for in-house applications in acceptance & production (mainly Windows IIS & SQL-based systems).
  • Participate in architecture and design discussions for new application deployments.
  • Interface with technical stakeholders to clarify requests and deliver scalable solutions.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and performance tuning.
  • Configure and maintain F5 load balancers and optimise system performance.
  • Support and maintain core shared tools like RabbitMQ, Redis Cache, and MongoDB.
  • Keep documentation and operational policies up to date.
  • Join the on-call duty rotation (24/7, 1 week every 6 weeks).


Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience with Windows Server (2012–2022) deployment and support.
  • Strong grasp of system architecture, IIS, and application integration.
  • Proficiency in PowerShell (plus Bash/Python is a plus).
  • Knowledge of MS SQL, MongoDB, RabbitMQ, or Redis Cache.
  • Familiarity with Linux (Red Hat) and hybrid cloud environments.
  • Solid understanding of networking and security fundamentals.
  • Fluent in English + French or Dutch.
  • Analytical, autonomous, and collaborative mindset.


Nice to Have

  • Experience in critical or high-availability systems.
  • Familiarity with containerisation or cloud automation.
  • Background in energy, utilities, or infrastructure environments.
