Conservation Assistant, Hong Kong Palace Museum


The Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) is a dedicated museum that showcases the exquisite artefacts from Palace Museum's collections and collaborates with other museums in research, exhibitions, education and public programmes. The museum comprises 7 800 square metres of gallery space for standing and special exhibitions on Palace Museum's collections of paintings, calligraphy, antiquities and historical objects, as well as thematic displays on world cultures and civilisations.
(This is a fixed-term contract position of 1-year with possibility for renewal subject to organisational needs and individual performance.)
To provide essential practical support, logistical and administrative to the Conservation and Collection Section. This role ensures the smooth execution of conservation programs, exhibition projects, and daily operations through meticulous coordination, documentation, and on-site assistance to preserve and present the museum's collections.
You Will Be Responsible For
Conservation Program & Project Support
Assist conservators to provide logistical management for special conservation programs, including coordinating partners, arranging logistics, and assisting to track project timelines.
Assist conservators with materials preparation, documentation, and basic conservation tasks as directed.
Perform mount drawing: create detailed drawings and specifications for custom object mounts and display solutions.
Exhibition and Gallery Operations
Deliver exhibition on-site support, including assisting with the safe installation, deinstallation, documentation and condition monitoring of objects in galleries.
Conduct regular gallery checks to assess object stability and environmental conditions during exhibitions.
Administration
Assist procurement on conservation materials and liaise with contractors.
Maintain accurate materials and equipment inventory records.
Manage meeting arrangements for the department, including scheduling, preparing agendas, recording minutes, and tracking action items.
Additional Duties
Performing any duties from time to time as reasonably as assigned by HKPM.
You Should
possess a recognised university degree, preferably in Chinese art history and archaeology; heritage/collection management; conservation/ conservation science, material culture; Chinese history; culture studies; museum studies; education; arts administration, or other relevant disciplines;
have a minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience in a museum conservation setting;
have strong organizational, administrative, and time-management skills;
have keen attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in documentation and object handling;
have foundational knowledge of conservation ethics, museum practices, and collection care;
be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with or ability to learn museum collection management databases;
be flexible and adaptable, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment; and
possess good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills in both English and Chinese; knowledge of Cantonese and Putonghua is an advantage.
