Our client is a high-tech spin-off from a leading Belgian R&D institute in nanoelectronics and digital technology. They specialize in developing ultra-compact, low-cost multispectral sensing solutions that power a wide range of consumer and industrial applications — from wearables and smartphones to automotive, biomedical, smart agriculture, colour sensing, food analysis, and smart object recognition.

Why They Are Hiring

The Systems Engineering function has until now been managed by a single team lead, covering everything from customer application understanding to optical-electronic system design and simulation. With a new generation of products in development, the company is expanding its systems engineering capabilities to:

• Build a more robust and scalable system architecture
• Accelerate delivery against the product roadmap
• Ensure knowledge sharing and mentoring within the team

Two hires are being made simultaneously:

• Junior System Engineer – to learn, contribute, and grow within the team under the guidance of senior colleagues.
• Senior System Engineer – to co-lead system architecture, define requirements with customers, and mentor junior colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and refine system-level architecture for optical-electronic sensing solutions
• Translate customer applications into clear product requirements
• Design, simulate, and validate optical and image sensor systems
• Collaborate across R&D, product, and customer teams to ensure integration
• (Senior) Lead architecture discussions, mentor colleagues, and guide design/simulation
• (Junior) Support design validation, learn tools and methodologies, and progressively take on more responsibility

Profile We’re Looking For

Senior System Engineer

• 5+ years’ experience in optical systems, image sensor design, or semiconductor development
• Strong system-level engineering mindset
• Proficiency with simulation/design tools for optical/electronic systems
• Ability to mentor and transfer knowledge

Junior System Engineer

• Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or related fields
• Strong interest in optical systems and sensors
• Basic exposure to design or simulation tools is an advantage
• Eagerness to learn and grow into a system engineering role

Work Environment & Benefits

• Location: Mechelen
• Hybrid model: 2 fixed on-site days (Monday & Thursday), with up to 3 remote days
• English is the working language; Dutch is a plus
