Senior Civil Engineer

Overview

We currently have a requirement for a Senior Civil Engineer to work on various projects for a client in the pharmaceutical sector in the region of Brussels.

PM Group is a leading International engineering, architecture, project and construction management firm. With a network of offices in Europe, Asia and the US and a multi-discipline team of more than 3,700 people, we deliver complex, capital projects in the life sciences, food and beverages, mission critical/ICT, advanced manufacturing, energy and environmental sectors.

Our Vision is to be a highly valued and creative delivery partner, building a more sustainable world with our clients.

Our OTS (Outsourced Technical Services) department supports projects in different sectors on basis of project staffing with consultants working at the client's site.

Responsibilities

The expert will act as an advisor, not a designer, ensuring that all civil & structural aspects across projects comply with standards, international norms, safety, cGxP, and green construction requirements.

Projects span a very wide range: offices, cafeterias, production buildings, laboratories, utilities buildings, underground works, roads, and infrastructure for large-scale industrial and pharmaceutical environments.

The role includes creating and updating technical standards, reviewing design deliverables, supporting feasibility and conceptual design, and advising internal engineers and external design/control offices.

  • Act as guardian of standards: provide standards at project start and ensure their application throughout all phases.
  • Perform technical reviews, verification of structural and civil deliverables (no design or calculations performed internally)
  • Support project teams, answer technical questions, challenge design offices, ensure compliance with client and international codes.
  • Participate in feasibility studies, conceptual design, and key project milestones.
  • Collaborate closely with internal engineers, external design offices and control offices.
  • Contribute to new standards, particularly for infrastructure and structural aspects.
    - Follow up on construction safety, green building principles, and technological trends.
    - Provide interface management across packages: Civil/Structural MEP Building envelope Roads & Utilities (VRD) Geotechnics, ensuring robust coordination and constructability.
  • Support execution when needed: define QA/QC approach, participate in inspections, unblock critical issues, and manage major non-conformities.
  • Perform forensic/asset-condition mindset reviews (\"pathologies\"): critically assess Technical Assessment (TA) reports, diagnose root causes, evaluate criticality, propose solution options and phasing.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • 8 to 10+ years depending on the relevance of the experience.
  • Experience in large, complex, multidisciplinary industrial projects is essential.
  • Experience in international projects is a clear plus.
  • Strong background in civil & structural engineering applied to large‑scale industrial/infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to work as an advisor, not a designer.
  • Solid understanding of civil/structural standards, Eurocodes, underground utilities, structural verification, etc.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary industrial projects (not focused on a single specialty).
  • Strong ability to challenge and support design offices and control offices.
  • Excellent English (mandatory).
  • Ability to work across cultures and functions; good communication and teamwork.
  • Knowledge of green construction principles / CO₂ reduction considerations.
  • Ability to work autonomously, make decisions quickly, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong ability to synthesize and drive decisions: produce concise decision \"one-pagers\" (issue → options → recommendation → risks) for stakeholders.
  • Pharma experience (not mandatory; can be learned on the job).
  • French (nice to have since the site is French‑speaking, but documents are in English).
  • Knowledge of BREEAM/LEED, fire safety, seismic design.
  • Experience with EPC/EPCM environments.
  • Working knowledge of contractual/project administration topics (e.g., RFIs, variations, claims) to support technical positions and decisions.
  • Applied circular-economy approach: reuse/redeployment, pragmatic circularity, and LCA/EPD (FDES/EPD equivalents) awareness—without compromising performance and risk control.
