We are looking for an experienced System Architect to support a major transformation within a regulated, safety-critical environment. This freelance assignment offers a unique opportunity to shape complex system architecture in alignment with long-term goals, safety requirements, and operational excellence.

Role Overview

As a System Architect, you will act as both application architect and analyst, translating high-level business needs into a coherent, future-proof system architecture. You’ll serve as the key link between the internal client and the system supplier, ensuring the technical design aligns with strategic objectives, safety standards, and operational constraints.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and document high-level system architecture and design.
• Gather and clarify high-level functional requirements with stakeholders.
• Translate operational and business needs into long-term architectural solutions.
• Lead and moderate technical workshops and discussions.
• Ensure architectural consistency across teams and components.
• Support development teams throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Align architectural decisions with safety, security, maintainability, and serviceability standards.
• Deliver high-quality documentation aligned with internal quality processes and project milestones.

Examples of Tasks

• Clarify new high-level functionalities with stakeholders and document requirements.
• Propose and defend architectural choices based on feasibility and future scalability.
• Participate in safety and security assessments where relevant.
• Support teams during implementation when architectural guidance is needed.
• Deliver all required architectural deliverables on time and up to standard.

Requirements

Languages:

• Fluent in English (spoken & written)
• Working knowledge of Dutch and/or French is a Must

Must-Have Skills:

• Proven experience in requirements engineering and systems analysis.
• Strong ability to lead workshops and gather customer needs effectively.
• Skilled in documenting clear, complete, and structured requirements.
• Knowledge of data modeling and architecture design tools (e.g., UML).
• Experience in UI design and enterprise application development. (Nice to Have: RUST Programming language)
• Understanding of hardware/software interactions, firewalls, networks, and system security.
• Open to working with and modernizing legacy safety-critical systems.

Nice to Have:

• Experience in the railway, transportation, or industrial automation sectors.
• Familiarity with railway signaling systems is a plus, but not required.
