Assistant Manager, Film Restoration, M+ Museum


M+ is a museum dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting visual art, design and architecture, moving image, and Hong Kong visual culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. (This is a fixed-term contract position of 2-year with possibility for renewal subject to organisational needs and individual performance.)
Working as part of the Moving Image team, you will be responsible for the successful delivery of two key projects involving the restoration, preservation, and circulation of moving image works, including feature-length films, experimental short films, and other cinematic forms and practices.
This Work Will Include But Not Be Limited To
coordinating film restoration and circulation library projects in alignment with project goals, museum policies, and industry best practices;
establishing and refining workflows, and allocating resources and expertise throughout the projects' lifecycles, including, for example, research, custody arrangements, cataloguing, digitization, media asset management, quality assessments, rights clearances, exhibition planning, access management, and sales and distribution stategy;
liaising with artists, filmmakers, vendors, contractors, museum colleagues, and touring partners to ensure the timely delivery of media assets, subtitles, rights clearances, contracts, and marketing and publicity materials;
managing all project workflows and production timelines;
maintaining project budgets, programming calendars, and screening schedules;
conducting elements and materials research and maintaining various databases;
creating project documentation, including project status and budget reports;
supporting event and interpretive video production;
managing, assessing, and working with video, film materials, and media files in a variety of formats and Codecs;
preparing videos, images, and title cards for exhibition;
coordinating the production of subtitles and closed captions;
liaising with government agencies and statutory bodies;
handling general administrative work; and
Performing any other duties from time to time as reasonably assigned by M+.
You Should Possess
a recognised university degree, preferably in relevant fields such as Film, Video, or Screen-based Studies, Humanities, Arts Administration, or Cultural Management. A certificate or degree in film and video archiving and preservation highly desirable;
have at least 5 years of experience in managing and/or coordinating high-profile film and/or moving image preservation, restoration, and or digitization projects at a museum, library, archive, cultural institution, and/or a rights-holding film organisation;
experience contributing research, planning, and decision making to high-profile film preservation and restoration projects;
competency in workflow planning for film preservation, restoration, or digitization projects;
knowledge of the principles, concepts, and histories of moving image as it applies to restoration methodologies, procedures, operations, and museum/archival practices;
knowledge of film, videotape, and audio formats and elements;
knowledge of copyright and rights clearance processes with regards to media assets and commercial law;
familiarity with film laboratories, conservation studios, and archives;
an excellent ability to work on projects and research assignments with a meticulous attention to detail, independently and in collaboration with others;
have proficiency with desktop production tools, including Davinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office, and other related software with demonstrable media production and data management skills;
excellent project and budget management skills;
excellent negotiation skills;
experience in institutional procedures; and
excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Chinese.
